Will Kerry Endorsement Sink Obama in South?

By Ally Klimkoski
January 10, 2008

Its no secret that John Kerry lost big in 2004, but Kerry did quite well among democrats. With independents however, Kerry faltered considerably in southern states. In South Carolina for example Kerry lost independents to Bush 42/56.

Obama has made remarkable gains with Independents and Republican voters who cross party lines to express their desires for change. Is a Kerry endorsement worth the baggage that comes with it?

Many have seen the Kerry endorsement as a dis for the Edwards Campaign - Kerry's former running mate.

Its a well known secret that Kerry and Edwards didn't get along well in 2004. Kerry gave up on Ohio while Edwards wanted to stay and fight (goes the well known rumor).

And personally? Well its really no secret that the two barely tolerated each other:

"It is no secret that the Massachusetts senator views Mr. Edwards' lack of foreign policy and military experience with disdain; Mr. Kerry once cracked that when he came back from Vietnam in 1969, Mr. Edwards might not have been ''out of diapers.'' He later called to apologize.

Mr. Edwards, who views his own sunny disposition as a campaign asset, has confided to close associates that Mr. Kerry lacks the kind of personal appeal necessary to win against President Bush." New York Times

The common whisper about Edwards now vs. 2004 with the Kerry campaign is that Edwards can now be himself - alluding to a possible censorship from top Kerry aids.

Its possible that Sen. Kerry has learned from his earlier errors and has finally understood that supporting a young candidate - who may not have been out of diapers during the Vietnam War, and someone with a sunny disposition could in fact lead the party into a more political capitol than the unfortunate baggage of Kerry's failed 2004 efforts and the Clinton drag.

Right now Bush disapproval is riding high in Louisiana, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, and even Mississippi. All sates where Kerry lost by a lot, but Obama could provide amazing crossover appeal and seal the deal in competitive congressional districts.

Hopefully Obama won't get slammed with Kerryism.
