Republican Absolutism

By Ally Klimkoski
November 13, 2007

I am so tired of living in the black and white world that Republicans keep trying to put us in.

If you saw The View yesterday or heard the spin from today you know about conservative speech writer turn commentator Laura Ingraham's talk with Barbara Walters.

"we have...really good news coming out of Baghdad" but "The View" co-hosts and the media more generally prefer to focus on the narrative of the US as a loser. And when challenged, by Barbara, Laura reverted to the age-old conservative tactic of questioning Barbara's patriotism, asking, "Do you want to win in Iraq?"

This comes after the release of the new Robert Redford film Lions for Lambs which presents an Ingrahm-like character in Tom Cruise - the Republican Senator who claims that the "quintessential question of our time" is "do you want to win the War on Terror, yes or no?"

Cruise has other lines straight out of the Republican talking points with his "Whatever it takes" philosophy that - as it did when they first began speaking about it - makes me want to barf.

As you can see Bill O'Reilly is going to have problems with what I'm about to say.

I get frustrated with Congressional Democrats who don't seem to either refute these kinds of statements nor do they stand up with clean and clear message on it.

Maybe they have lame message people or maybe its just that they are scared of having this fight. But I think this fight is one worth fighting.

So here Congress - I'm going to give you a little gift of some free message:

I put America first not Iraq. I put the safety, security, stability, and happiness of my fellow Americas first and foremost and until you stop bungling the War in Iraq, the War in Afghanistan, and the War on Terror I will oppose you.

And there it is. As a party that once protected themselves with God and the American Flag I wonder why they are so quick to throw Americans under the bus.

Secondly, I find it amazing that Republicans go so far to lie about Iraq (after 2007 has been the deadliest year EVER). If they can't even bring themselves to tell the truth about the status of the country, how is it that they can come up with reasonable solutions to fix the war they've broken?

Step One: Admit the truth
Step Two: Reexamine Strategy based on this truth

I think Nancy Boyda's statements in her Armed Services Committee Hearing several months ago were thoughtful ones:

"Those kinds of statements will in fact show up in the media and further divide this country instead of saying 'here's the reality of the problem.' And people we have to come together and deal with the reality of this issue."

While Nancy Boyda seems more inclined to calmly and rationally discuss these issues and work to bring people together, I'm more of a mind to use Republican tactics and say - you're not with us you're for Iraq not America and FORCE them to our side.

That said its probably easier for me because I don't have to compromise with anybody.

Blackink:

Didn't Nancy Boyda make those calm and rational statements after storming out on the retired General?

Wouldn't it have been more calm and rational to sit in her chair, be respectful, and have the discussion with the General in the room?

Instead she acted like a child, not a congresswoman, stormed out when she didn't hear what she liked and then AFTER the General had left and someone had told her to grow up, she returned to make a statement. She could have just as well sat there and asked the General pointed questions but chose to embarrass Kansas once again.
