81% Support Expanding SCHIP, Including Republicans

By Lucy Belnora
October 19, 2007

For millions of children who were denied health care coverage because of Bush's veto, yesterday's vote was a somber reminder that the president stands squarely against their interests. A defensive Bush said in a press conference this week that he vetoes bills to "ensure that I am relevant."

The recent CBS News poll finds that eight in 10 Americans favor expanding the State Children's Health Insurance Program, or SCHIP, including large majorities of Republicans, Democrats, and Independents. More generally, the poll finds that only about one in five Americans (22 percent) approve of George Bush's handling of health care. That's lower even than his approval rating on Iraq (26 percent).

For the cost of just 41 days of war in Iraq, the nation could insure 10 million children for one year.

Bush has issued four vetoes during his presidency, twice blocking stem cell research, withdrawal from Iraq, and now SCHIP.

And that's why when I tell you I'm going to sprint to the finish, and finish this job strong, that's one way to ensure that I am relevant. That's one way to ensure that I'm in the process. And I intend to use the veto. (George W. Bush)

Well, 4 out of 5 Americans don't want his veto of SCHIP. 2 out of 3 Americans don't approve of how he is doing his job. And, the 1 out of every 5 children that goes without medical attention suffers because this Bush, the Bully, is more focussed on his personal "sprint to the finish."

The Reuters/Zoby poll released on Wednesday showed that Bush's job approval rating fell to 24 percent from last month's record low for a Zogby poll of 29 percent. Bush has now tied President Nixon's all-time low approval rating as measured by the Gallup Poll.

He's been a disgrace. He's been an embarrassment. He's been destructive, reckless and dangerous.

Now, he also wants to be relevant?

Tell that to the sick child or the child's worried mother. In the homes of uninsured children, when illness strikes, their world stops. For those children, tonight, like every night, there are tears and cries of anguish.

No one is relevant unless he brings hope instead of despair.

George Bush, you are NOT relevant.

You are just a two bit bully.

I wish people would actually open their eyes and realize why president bush vetoed the bill. SCHIP is intended to help those who do not qualify for government assistance but can not afford insurance of their own. In my state there is no income limit on who can use it. Im sorry but a family making 80,000 a year and want to dip into this money is not right. This is not intended for them although this is happening. Why should we expand it? So more families who can actually afford their own health insurance can mooch off the government as well?
