We'll Just Take Your Arm

By Ally Klimkoski
September 7, 2007

Couple of things going on over on the left coast.

Sometimes talking about health care can be boring. Sometimes it can be sad and compelling. But when there is a cartoon??

As part of the overwhelming work to reform health care Sick of BlueCross is taking on an ambitious task of holding leaders in Sacramento accountable for campaign promises. This compared to a campaign on behalf of Blue Cross (and their roster of insurance agent peeps) that are forking over bank to scare people away from reform.

This matters to us particularly because Blue Cross has this special plan they call the Tonik Plan that specifically targets young people.

You might have seen the skit on The Daily Show about it. Tonik with a "k" -yeah baby!

What is so badass about Tonik is that the premiums are low! Drop it like its hot... It is cheap health care, man! Perfect for those who want to blow their wad on DVDs and the new iPod that just came out. And the deductible is high! And being high is awesome!? So - basically you get to pay for that broken arm all by yourself! BlueCross will only pay after you spend your $5,000 deductible. So - basically you owe 'em that arm. Hey, you got two.

So this is totally useless. What could be more rad than a total useless health care plan? Nationally, medical bills account for about 50% of the bankruptcies in this country. So, for my first bankruptcy I'll do it because of the predatory lending from credit card companies with 29% APR - then my second bankruptcy will be from the high cost of medical bills I had after giving birth to my devil-baby from being screwed by republicans! HEY! Good times!

So if you're a Cali reader go check out Sick of BlueCross if not for the policy then at least for the great videos and stellar web 2.0 design.

Some other great shiznet went down in Cali last week. The San Fran Chronicle did a little ditty on how the Repug brand is dropping like Bob Dole without his special blue pill. No! Really? No! But they seem so - hip and original and diverse (old, older, ancient)

So the Chronicle says

"Arnold Schwarzenegger and Ronald Reagan, charged into the California governor's office with the help of young voters, many of whom were drawn to the Republican Party by a message of sunny optimism."

Baaaaahahahaha - have you SEEN this guy?

Is this the optimism of which they speak? This dude is totally partying on the sunny side of life...

So - right after this piece and the poll went down - I get this email from the CDP (yes I'm on every state's mailing list) letting me know that they think I'm swell.

"Still, the California Democratic Party refuses to take the youth vote for granted, and is continually taking proactive steps to solidify support from young Californians.

For instance, the CDP is currently establishing new partnerships with the California Young Democrats and College and High School Democratic clubs to build upon the successes of 2006 among young voters. In 2006, the CDP recruited over 2000 students from 160 high schools across California becoming Democratic Activists for the first time. And this year, the CDP raised its goal for youth representation in the California delegation for the 2008 Democratic National Convention."

Well I'll be damn... Better late than never. I'm hoping that where Cali goes the nation will follow. Maybe we can make it hip for the old fogies to think we matter! GO CALI GO!
