Bush Opposes Health Care for 3 Million Children

By Stuart Elliott
July 30, 2007

President Bush is telling some 3.3 million poor kids who don't have health care insurance because their families can't afford it, they better start saving their nickels and dimes so they can buy private health insurance because the government's not going to help.

This week, Bush reiterated his threat to veto legislation that renews the very successful State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP).

Why? Because it provides additional money to add those 3.3 million kids to the rolls of a program that provides health care coverage to more than 6 million low-income children.

He says enrolling those new kids in SCHIP would hurt the private insurance industry, even though they currently have no health insurance because their families cannot afford it.

The logic escapes us.
