In the summer issue of Shelterforce. [www.nhi.org/online/issues/150/mockthevote.html]
I have written a piece on the connection between US Attorneygate, ACORN and the GOP voter fraud scam. Karl Rove's strategy has been to make it much more difficult for poor and minority people to register to vote and to vote, particularly in key swing states. Harassing groups like ACORN that register and mobilize the poor, on trumped up charges of "voter fraud," has been a major tactic of Rove, with implications for the 2008 races.
You can read a shorter version at Tompaine.com [www.tompaine.com/articles/2007/06/11/out_to_get_acorn.php]
Registering poor people and minorities has long been on the agenda of civil-rights and progressive groups. More than one out of four voting-age citizens-more than 50 million Americans-are unregistered. In 2002, 80 percent of families with incomes above $75,000 voted regularly, compared with 25 percent of families with incomes below $10,000, according to the Census Bureau. Most poor Americans don't vote because they see politicians as unresponsive to their needs or perspectives. ACORN combines its voter registration campaigns with ballot initiative the encourage voter registration and turnout.

John, I am new to Everyday Citizen too - and I'm so thrilled that you are writing here and that you will try to write frequently (as I am trying to do).
One thing - it's perfectly OK to "cross post" any of your blog postings. So, for example, your column at tompaine.com can be reposted here in it's entirety. If you feel that you must, you can footnote and say "cross posted to tompaine.com" or "first published in tompaine.com" or whatever. Many bloggers do cross posting, rather than just linking. For example, I've noticed that Ally Klimkoski cross posts to Future Majority and Larry James cross posts to Sojourner!
So anyway, don't hesitate to cross post!
To help you this time, I'm copying your TomPaine.com article below for the benefit of your readers here! You wrote:
Great article! John Atlas has a longer version of this in his magazine here.
Welcome John!

Mr. Atlas,
Thank you so much for the copy of your article here. When I read your words (from the TomPaine reprint) that said:
I just felt so grateful that we are still talking about this. It seems that after the Gore/Bush election in 2000, with all the uncounted votes and voter suppression in Florida, and then, the 2004 Kerry/Bush election with all the suspect activities in Ohio and other places - so many Americans have lost faith in our elections. That is a huge tragedy.
I hope you will post more about this issue. It's an important one.

John Atlas,
I echo everybody. So glad you are here.
It is disturbing that the Bush (Ashcroft/Gozales) people are using heavy hands to investigate "voter fraud" when what we really should be investigating is "voter suppression."
There's also a tie-in with the attorney firings that more Americans need to hear about.
When looked at in its entirety, it makes one think of the KGB. We have so much work to do to make things right again. It's got to begin with election fairness and justice.

John Atlas,
I am grateful that you are bringing this issue (and the attending problems) into the limelight. With such important elections around the corner, next year, I for one, am ready to fight for election fairness. There's also the issue about electronic ballots and the lack of papertrail for voting in many states. We have many problems that absolutely must be solved.

I think so much of this is still too far under the radar of the media and the press. I didn't know that US Attorney Iglesias lost his job after he declined to prosecute a voter-fraud case against ACORN.
Great post.

The Democrats have been teaching victimization, dependency and oppression for decades. The Democrats have always used and are still USING minorities to achieve their own agenda, because if they truly wanted to hear the voices of the American people, they would have listened long ago.
