The Faces of Iran

By Alice Pfeifer
March 3, 2007

While I won't be able to start my real blogging here until mid-March (until after I get some of my current coursework behind me), I thought it would be fun meanwhile to share with you here about my recent letter to the editors of TIME magazine.

A week ago or so, I sent a letter to TIME remarking about a feature that they published about Iran. TIME magazine notified me today that "excerpts" of my letter will be published in the March 12th issue, which is at the newsstands this week. So, here's the unedited version of my letter to TIME...

"As a busy grad student, I thought long and hard before renewing my TIME subscription. Some weeks my copy simply goes unread for lack of - ironically - time. However, my renewal decision was clinched by your publication of 'The Real Iran' (Feb. 26, 2007). There ought to be a law that every major news outlet in the country must run features like this anytime the US government openly contemplates another military action, police action, or 'freedom fight' abroad. If we think we know enough about a people to know what is best for them, then we ought to be able to look their ordinary citizens straight in the eyes before killing them for their own good. And please spare those people the speeches about how it is only their government we hate, not them. If the whole world operated by that standard, Blair's Britain and Bush's USA would have been invaded and conquered by the rest of the world a good four years ago."

(Here are the faces of Iranians that I refer to above.)

Alice,

Very cool. Can't wait to get my copy of TIME to see what "excerpts" they used. Welcome to the blog, by the way! Glad you joined our little band of brave souls!

Democratic National Convention

Everyday Citizen has been selected as one of only 55 blogs nationwide to be "embedded" with convention delegates at the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver, August 25th to 29th. Plus, Everyday Citizen is among only 120 total blog sites credentialed in the nation.

Also thanks to wonderful hosts in Denver like ProgressNow and other orgs, many of our EC authors are looking forward to some great networking with other activists and grassroots organizers in the Big Tent in Denver. The Big Tent is a precious resource for our budget conscious and travel weary activists!

Our group of Everyday Citizen authors will be blogging from the Big Tent, blogging from the caucuses, and enjoying some unprecedented and unfettered access to the delegate floor, above and beyond the privileges provided to traditional media. We hope you stay tuned right here for your ongoing, close-up and ringside blog coverage of this historic convention!
