Though he hasn't begun his blogging here at Everyday Citizen yet (don't worry, he'll jump in one of these days), we claim him as our own. John T. Bird was recently honored at the annual Washington Days meeting of his state Democratic Party! He was awarded the John D. Montgomery Distinguished Service Award in Topeka. The award is considered the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a non-publicly elected Democrat by the Kansas party.
John Bird lives in Ellis County. The previous and only other recipient from his county, Norbert Dreiling, in 1995, was the third person to be honored with the award. This award is named for the late John D. Montgomery, a longtime party activist. John D. Montgomery was editor and publisher of the family owned Junction City Daily Union, and state party chairman from 1960 to 1962. Many Kansas Democrats considered him a mentor.
The HDN reports, "In his comments accepting the award, Bird told the Democrats that it was especially poignant for him to be given an award associated with his mentors, Montgomery and Dreiling."
John said, "I entered the Democratic politics because of the fine example Norbert Dreiling set for an entire generation of Kansans, and I learned from John D. Montgomery how to make politics a daily part of my life, just like reading the newspaper or going to church. I will cherish this award and try to continue to live up to the high standards set for us by its namesake."
Congratulations, John!
